The world’s population is growing and we’re expected to add 2 Billion more in just 30 years. As nations prosper, meat consumption increases. Feeding 35% more people will require 100% more crops.

Producing salads and strawberries more efficiently is commendable, but if we’re going to have any significant impact on the world, we need to tackle the massive $400bn elephant in the room. Animal Feed.

So the simple answer to the question “Why?” is: WE DON’T HAVE A CHOICE

Alfalfa has been, and still is, a highly sought-after livestock feed since ancient Persia and Roman times due to its superior protein and mineral content.

Alfalfa is cultivated across most US States and the world, with some of the regions with the highest yields found in the semi-deserts of Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and southern California where the combination of year-round sun, limited frost, and historically abundant irrigation waters made these regions massively productive.

With rivers running low and aquifers pumped dry, production in these regions may collapse.

Fodderbox has been established with this problem in mind and aims to offer farmers in regions at risk of extreme or prolonged drought a model to produce an equal quantity of alfalfa at 1/20th the amount of water. We combine hydroponics, a closed-circuit irritation system, and a climate-controlled smart vertical greenhouse.

Building a vertical farm is capital-intensive! It’s also costly and complex to set up and operate.

Excess production can be sold by you, the Farmer, or through our Alfalfa marketplace, further reducing your feed cost, or turning it into a profit center.
